UPDATE: Since this notice was posted earlier today, the Town has closed the section of trail connecting Rowan Avenue to the main loop. The remaining portion of the tree presents a risk of falling and must be removed. Please do not enter the closed trail section or cross any caution tape or barriers.

The information below stating that the trail remains open is no longer accurate for this section. Other shelters remain available.

SPENCER – A tree fell on the smaller shelter near the Rowan Avenue trail access at Stanback Educational Forest on Monday, July 13. The damage was discovered late that night. The tree may have fallen because of the recent heavy rainfall in the area. To the Town’s knowledge, no one was present or injured.

Only the damaged shelter is closed. The trail and Rowan Avenue access remain open, and other shelters are still available. Visitors should not enter the damaged shelter or cross the caution tape surrounding the area.

The Town is working with its insurance provider and will arrange for the tree and shelter debris to be removed. The Town plans to rebuild the shelter once funding is available, but there is currently no timeline for removal or reconstruction.
