UPDATE 06/27/2025: Spencer to celebrate this weekend: Fireworks Over Historic Spencer Shops and opening of Town Park

Jun 23, 2025

UPDATE 6/27/25: Due to conditions of the newly established gathering lawn in Spencer Town Park, attendees for tomorrow’s opening celebration will be directed to view the ceremony and performance from the many areas available surrounding the lawn. Ample sidewalk areas will be available surrounding three sides of the lawn, and Fifth Street will be closed between Salisbury Avenue and 115 Fifth Street. Additionally, we have partnered with the N.C. Transportation Museum to ensure that additional viewing locations will be accessible on the Master Mechanic’s Office (gift shop building) porch and patio areas.

We hope the entire community enjoys this event and takes part in the activities planned at Spencer Town Park and on the NC Transportation Museum grounds near the Roundhouse.

SPENCER – After nine months of construction and several years of planning, the Town of Spencer is excited to welcome the community into the new Spencer Town Park on Saturday, June 28, in conjunction with the North Carolina Transportation Museum’s annual Fireworks Over Historic Spencer Shops event. The Free community event at NCTM culminates with Fireworks starting at 9:15 p.m. and will feature the “Firecracker Express” train ride (fee for tickets). Find out more about activities on NCTM grounds at nctransportationmuseum.org/fireworks-over-historic-spencer-shops/

For activities on the other side of Salisbury Avenue, we will have a brief ceremony and photo opportunity to open the park at 4:30 and local band Motel Soap will take the stage at 5p.m., playing throughout the evening. This will be a soft opening of Spencer Town Park with a formal dedication ceremony to follow in the fall. Live music at this event is possible from the support of several community sponsors, including: Spencer Partnership, Rob and Beth Nance, Dr. Washko Family Dentistry, Spencer Woman’s Club, Spencer Masonic Lodge, Central United Methodist Church, and Spencer Presbyterian Church.

We have encouraged local restaurants to be open, and the Kona Ice and Stick it 2 You food trucks are planning to be on site.
