Join us this year at Talk of the Town
SPENCER — Town staff are excited to launch a new community engagement opportunity called “Talk of the Town.” This program will meet (roughly) quarterly and be an “a la carte” version of a citizens academy for our community. Simply put, citizens academies are educational programs conducted by local governments to create better informed and engaged citizens.
While new to Spencer, this concept appears in communities across North Carolina. The North Carolina City/County Management Association (NCCCMA), the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) School of Government (SOG), and other entities have researched best practices and offered guidance to communities who provide or would like to start an academy. This includes a website and published handbook from UNC faculty member Rick Morse and his contributors and colleagues.
We plan to hold this program on a Tuesday in February, April, September, and November at 6:15 p.m. Our inaugural program on February 25 will focus on our budget process, and future dates (likely April 15, September 16, and November 18) will have the topics announced in the near future. Potential topics include Police, Code Enforcement, Fire, Planning, Getting Involved, Solid Waste, Streets, Recreation, and more.
If you would like to attend Talk of the Town on February 25, please fill out this form so we can better prepare for the program.
Our staff and elected officials are committed to finding new ways to connect with Spencer’s residents, businesses, and visitors, and we are excited about this new opportunity. We hope to see you soon at one of these or another of our upcoming meetings or events this year. Thank you for partnering with us as we build a model community.
