Statement from Spencer Mayor Jonathan Williams on Tis the Season Spectacular’s decision

Aug 8, 2024

SPENCER—This week, the Town was notified that the organizers of our local Christmas parade do not wish to continue starting it in Spencer, as it has for many decades. Below is a statement from Mayor Williams on this decision.

While the Town of Spencer is disappointed to hear that the Tis The Season Spectacular organization will not be seeking a parade permit in Spencer this year, we wholeheartedly understand this is their organization’s sole decision and fully respect it. We appreciate the partnership and holiday cheer that Tis the Season has brought to our town since taking over the parade leadership several years ago. We are grateful for the immense time, energy, and resources the committee and other volunteers have put into making the parade a success, and we wish the committee well in future events in the greater Rowan County community. We also appreciate the advance notice of their decision so that we can plan accordingly in Spencer for this holiday season. Best of luck to Tis the Season Spectacular as we all look to build on new and growing holiday traditions within each of our communities.

The original correspondence can be read here.

We know many in the community are disappointed and want to be part of discussions about what comes next. Our parade in Spencer is not organized or controlled by the Town, but we are certainly in a position to facilitate and support its success. Of course, our Town staff involvement is critical for a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Heather Resino, Lynne Purvis, Todd Johnston, and Gail Johnston are organizing a meeting on Monday night at the fairgrounds on Julian Road to start this discussion. See the shared post below for more information. We appreciate all who have created traditions and memories throughout our history, as well as those to come.
